Phoenix, AZ. Charity Storage, the official charity of the self storage industry and an official charity partner of the Self Storage Association (SSA), is pleased to announce the appointment of Kristi Adams, VP of Marketing at OpenTech Alliance, as its new Board Chair. Replacing Robert A. Chiti, Adams brings a wealth of experience and passion to this new role, including 20+ years of experience in the self storage industry, expertise in both domestic and international marketing and three years of volunteer service with Charity Storage.
“I’m always proud to see women move into leadership positions in our industry,” stated Alyssa Quill, CEO at Storage Asset Management and SSA Board Chair. “As a member of the Advisory Board of the Self Storage Association’s Women’s Council, Kristi has been creative, hardworking, supportive and an incredible leader. I can’t wait to see the positive impact she’ll have on this wonderful nonprofit as the Chair of Charity Storage!
Adams was first introduced to the self storage industry in 2004 while pursuing a marketing degree in college. Her uncle, who owned a storage facility in Omaha, Nebraska, needed help reducing advertising costs and asked Adams for help. This initial project sparked Adams’ interest in self storage and eventually led to her involvement in the launch of USstoragesearch.com, an online directory for storage facilities.
Following entrepreneurial success, Adams was recruited by CubeSmart as their Director of Marketing, where she helped with a digital transformation of their marketing strategies, reducing the company’s reliance on outdated advertising efforts.
After CubeSmart, Adams started her own consulting business in Europe, working with CubeSmart, OpenTech and other self storage companies in both the U.S. and international markets. Upon returning to the U.S., she joined OpenTech Alliance and was introduced to Charity Storage, where she experienced firsthand the nonprofit’s impact and industry support.
“Charity Storage holds a special place in the hearts of those at OpenTech,” stated Jenny Bortman, President & CEO at Universal Insurance Programs, a 25+ year industry fixture. “Assuming the role of Board Chair of Charity Storage, Kristi is dedicated to giving her best, demonstrating her commitment across all facets of her life. With her unwavering dedication, Kristi is poised to elevate Charity Storage to new heights. It is truly a moment of celebration for Charity Storage, OpenTech and Kristi.”
As she steps into her new role, Adams shares her hope for the future of Charity Storage. “My vision is for Charity Storage to become the self storage industry’s nonprofit — offering more convenient ways for operators to give back, serving as a resource to enhance operators’ cause marketing initiatives and boosting our industry’s reputation in the eyes of the public,” stated Adams. “We’ve built such a talented team of volunteers from across the industry. I am very excited to jump into this new role and propel the founders’ vision for Charity Storage.”
“I am very excited to have an experienced leader like Kristi carry on my father’s legacy,” stated Drew Hoeven, son of Charity Storage’s late Co-Founder, Barry Hoeven, and Chairman of the Board and Chief Investment Officer of Westport Properties. “With her extensive background in the self storage industry and expertise in marketing, I can think of no one better to carry the torch and lead Charity Storage to new heights!”
